Kemblesville 3rd Grade STEM Wing
expansion
Landberg, PA | 16,800 SF

Avon Grove Charter School looked to consolidate office spaces and add a third grade and STEM classrooms to their existing k-2 facility as part of a longterm real estate strategy. Heckendorn Shiles Architects evaluated multiple site plans and existing conditions configurations for a design solution that would limit impacts on the school’s day-to-day during the expansion.
The addition is a straight forward double-loaded corridor with enhanced corridor zones that enable instructional pull-outs according to IEP needs. The STEM classroom makes use of playful lego and pegboard architectural elements for age appropriate inspiration. For lease consolidation, HSA made use of existing topography to locate the school’s business office spaces below the 3rd grade level. The facade design references existing masonry patterning while utilizing a cement panel system with lessened installation timeframe.
As part of the campus expansion project for the elementary school, the existing playspace required a thoughtful reconfiguration to accommodate the new building footprint while enhancing outdoor play opportunities for Kindergarten through 3rd-grade students. Our design carefully reimagined the paved play areas, optimizing space for basketball courts and integrating a dedicated bike track to promote active movement. Storage sheds were strategically placed to support outdoor equipment needs, while sunsail shades were introduced to provide much-needed sun protection for students. Additionally, new playground equipment was selected and installed by the school's playground vendor, ensuring age-appropriate and engaging play structures. Our firm developed clear and accessible circulation paths, thoughtfully connecting the various play zones to create a cohesive, functional, and engaging environment for young learners.
The overall project duration from design proposal to occupancy was only 20 months, including zoning variances, land approvals, and public multi-prime bidding requirements.
