HMS School Bus Canopy

Since 1989, our firm has changed in size and stature, but our core principles have endured.

Our experience stems from when architects Mitch Shiles and the late Philip Hooper first established Hooper Shiles Architects in 1989. The two architects had already been working together for several years. They were sent to help rebuild communities in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, after 90 percent of the islands had been devastated by Hurricane Hugo. The experience evolved into Hooper and Shiles’ appreciation for all forms of architectural design, from new construction to adaptive reuse and additions/ renovations

Over the years, the firm has cultivated a growing and diverse portfolio. Project types include: Corporate; commercial; educational; athletic; adaptive reuse; LEED design; municipal; master planning; multi-family housing and much more. Notable clients include the City of Philadelphia, School District of Philadelphia, Shire Pharmaceuticals, QVC, Comcast Spectacor, Brandywine Realty Trust, Bala House Montessori School, HMS School, Avon Grove Charter School, and Melmark.

Matt Heckendorn, an architect who had collaborated with HSA for 10 years, was named a Principal in 2007. As a reflection of Matt’s co-ownership and expanded leadership role, the firm’s name changed to Heckendorn Shiles Architects in 2012.

Several factors have enabled Heckendorn Shiles Architects to remain resilient and strong amidst economic and market fluctuations: Mitch's thirty years of professional experience; Matt’s thoughtful, methodical approach to design and project management; and Phil's legacy of energy and creativity. Supporting Heckendorn and Shiles are the firm’s three senior associates: Janet S. Colesberry, AIA - Senior Associate; Karen Kovolski, LEED AP - Interior Designer; and Project Manager Nissa Grant Eisenberg .
