November 2019 marks our 30th anniversary. The firm’s early success was spearheaded by friends and colleagues Phil Hooper and Mitch Shiles as they led residential reconstruction projects in St. Croix post Hurricane Hugo. In 2007, longtime HSA project architect Matt Heckendorn became Principal and the firm’s name subsequently changed to Heckendorn Shiles Architects. Our thirty-year history has seen an evolution of project types, technology and sustainable initiatives while our commitment to deliver innovative and powerful designs has been constant.
Today we are a dynamic practice with diverse project types including interior, educational, therapeutic, sports facilities and ice rinks, community and municipal buildings, space and master planning, and art installation. We have received awards for our adaptive reuse, historic restoration and sustainable projects.
To date, we have completed over 1100 design projects in 12 states. Highlights of recent work includes the Adaptive Reuse of a former Asbestos Textile mills, renovations to Philadelphia landmarks including the Cira Centre and Wells Fargo Arena, the Philadelphia Flyers Practice Facility and guidance on a public art structure for the Papal visit to Philadelphia in 2015. Our talented team of architects and interiors designers continue to champion new project types that push our portfolio, technology, and collective imagination.
